Located within a short walk of Highgate Village, this substantial five-bedroom Victorian terraced house has been remodelled to exemplary effect by the architects Dow Jones. Designed to function as both a family home and a private art gallery, it combines period detailing with wonderful modern living spaces, offering approximately 3,194 sq ft of generous accommodation and outstanding natural light.

The ground floor contains a large entrance hall, with elegant oak joinery concealing a utility room, a downstairs WC, and stairs to the cellar. This leads to the excellent kitchen-diner, with full-height glazed Cantifix doors opening onto the pretty garden. There is a living room / library behind the kitchen, accessed via folding doors. At the front is a reception room with a bay window, currently used for displaying art. The first floor contains a utility room, three double bedrooms, one with an en-suite shower room, and a modern bathroom with freestanding bath. The second floor has a fourth bedroom at the rear, and a huge master bedroom and en-suite bathroom that runs front to back.

Dow Jones Architects carried out the refurbishment in 2010-11. Responding to the client’s needs for a home and private gallery, the design allows for a degree of flexibility between the ground-floor spaces. The standard of materials and craftsmanship is very high, with large amounts of built-in storage throughout. The kitchen has a beautiful textured granite worktop, bespoke oak units, built-in speakers and a generous rooflight. The architects removed the concrete-tiled roof and replaced it with a more lightweight structure with composite tiles, allowing for unusually good ceiling height on the top floor. Every floor has been insulated, and the house has been replumbed and rewired. There is under-floor heating in the kitchen, and secondary glazing in many of the rooms. The house has lovely views of trees at the rear.

Highgate Village contains a wide variety of shops, cafés, pubs and restaurants. The vast open spaces of Hampstead Heath and Waterlow Park, and the ancient Highgate Wood and Queen’s Wood, are all close at hand. The Northern Line at Archway provides direct access to King’s Cross, the West End and the City, and there are convenient road links to the A1, leading to the M1, A406 and M25. The area is renowned for its excellent schools, including Highgate School, St Michael’s Primary School and Channing.
