Built in 1955 and designed by the architect Hugh V. Sprince, this house on Chepstow Crescent is located in the heart of Notting Hill. A rare and outstanding example of a modern terraced house in this much sought-after area, the elegant architecture of the property sits comfortably amongst the primarily 19th century houses of Chepstow Crescent and the surrounding streets.

The house was built to consist of an upper two-floor flat and a separate three-floor lower apartment with private rear garden and front off-street parking. For sale is the freehold of the building, a new 125-yr lease on the lower apartment, and the reversionary interest of the 125-yr lease on the upper flat. The large lower apartment has approximately 135 sq m / 1450 sq ft of internal space with up to five bedrooms.

Sprince (b. 1920) was educated at the Architectural Association where he studied under C. S. Mardall, one of the key figures in establishing Modernism in Britain (Mardall is best known for his work with YRM, the architectural practice he set up in 1944 with F.R.S. Yorke and E. Rosenberg). The house on Chepstow Crescent was one of Sprince’s early designs and is a good example of what he became known for throughout his career, namely integrating modern ideas and styles into more traditional environments.

Internally the house is designed as a cascading flow of space around a central staircase. The house offers great privacy and versatility, with a generous amount of outdoor space both in the rear garden and on two terraces.

The house was bought by the present owners in 1979 and underwent extensive renovation in the mid-1990s under the guidance of Barber Osgerby (www.barberosgerby.com), the celebrated London-based design studio. By slightly modifying the front elevation, installing double-glazed Senlac windows throughout, reworking the interior space on the lower ground floor, and designing much of the storage and fitted furniture, Barber Osgerby have succeeded in restoring the Modernist spirit of the building.

Chepstow Crescent is one of Notting Hill’s most popular streets, lined with cherry trees and close to a desirable selection of first-class shops, restaurants and cinemas. Notting Hill Gate Underground station (Central/Circle/District) is a short walk away, and the area is served by numerous buses and taxi-runs, with the Heathrow link from Paddington easily accessible.
