“A fresh reinterpretation of a traditional Victorian workers cottage”

This recently renovated Victorian cottage in Hampton is as delightful inside as it is out. It retains many of its original features, including sash windows and internal doors, as well as newer additions like the large garage/workshop in the pretty rear courtyard garden. Hampton is a picturesque village on the River Thames, next to the bucolic and expansive Bushey Park.

The Tour

The cottage on Church Street has a simple white façade echoed in the fresh, neutral palette used inside. The windows at the front of the house have double glazing, while the originals have been retained at the rear.

On entry is a hallway for coats and shoes that passes to the main living spaces. The living room is brilliantly bright care of its dual-aspect windows; an elegant curved bay is at the front, while a six-over-six sash window frames garden views at the rear. Deep, stained oak flooring runs throughout.

At the back of the plan is the recently remodelled galley kitchen. A run of oak base units house integrated appliances, a pull-out pantry and bookshelves ideal for cookery books. White hanging cupboards are married with a simple white worktop. This bright space invites natural light from a window and glazed door leading to the courtyard garden. A pocket sliding door at the rear of the kitchen opens to a WC.

An open staircase with iron handrail leads up to two bedrooms from the living room. There is one at the front and one at the rear, both softly carpeted. In the second bedroom, an original recessed cupboard has been retained for storage. The bathroom is entered via the second bedroom. With two double-glazed windows, the bathroom is flooded with light and has a bath with an overhead shower. A sliding pocket door leads to a handy utility room.

Outside Space

The brick-walled garden has plenty of space for a table and chairs. Entry is from the kitchen or from a side gate. Trellis run across the warm brickwork – perfect for climbing plants – and hooks have been positioned for a relaxing hammock. At the rear of the garden is a door to the back of the garage. The side gate leads to the quiet lane beyond and the garage’s front entrance.

Area Guide

Hampton is a historic village in the London Borough of Richmond-Upon-Thames with a wonderful riverside position. Garrick’s Temple, an 18th-century monument to Shakespeare, and an award-winning pub The Bell Inn are particularly notable spots.

The centre of Twickenham is a 15-minutes by car and has a range of independent shops, restaurants and pubs including a Waitrose and a farmers’ market on Saturdays.

The vast green expanse of Bushy Park is a 10-minute walk from the house to the east. With walking, running and cycling trails, it’s the second largest of the Royal Parks, with over 1,000 acres of parkland that includes roaming deer among ancient trees, woodlands and lawns. Next to the park is the beautiful Hampton Court Palace, a 5 minute bus ride from the house.

For sports enthusiasts, Hampton also has a year-round heated outdoor swimming pool, rugby club and Hampton Sailing Club on the banks of the Thames.

The local area has lots of great schools, both private and state-run; all the primary schools in the area are either rated “Good” or “Outstanding”.

Church Street has good transport links. Hampton station is 14-minutes on foot where regular services run to London Waterloo via Vauxhall. The house is also a short drive from the M3 and has good access to the M25 and M4.
