Hay-On-Wye, Powys, Wales

£619,950 Freehold

Set near Hay-on-Wye, in the heart of the village of Clyro, this remarkable Grade II* listed house has been comprehensively restored and refurbished by Mark & Sally Bailey, the couple behind the influential interiors company Baileys.

The six-bedroom house has over 3,300 sq ft of internal space, as well as off-street parking and gardens. The Baileys have pared back the interior to maximise the sense of space and light. The walls have been stripped back to raw plaster and the flooring incorporates oak boards and large flagstones. This simple, utilitarian approach creates the beautiful, elegant effect for which the Baileys are best known.

The extensive accommodation (there are seventeen rooms in all) is arranged over four floors. The ground floor has a large entrance hall and three receptions rooms, with stairs leading down to the lower ground floor where the kitchen / dining room can be found. The six bedrooms can be found on the upper two floors. A full description of all the accommodation can be found by clicking here.

The front of the house is approached through an original wrought iron gate via a stone paved path. The front and side garden has an area of lawn and planted beds.  To the rear is a flagstoned terrace alongside a small brook.  The main garden is accessed through a doorway in the stone garden wall which opens into a lawned area with mature hedged boundaries.

The history of the property since its construction in the 1800s is a fascinating one and is part of its immense appeal. For a long time, it was the home of Reverend Robert Francis Kilvert, a clergyman whose published diaries are among the most celebrated social documents of the era. The house was constructed at a time when a nearby church was being refurbished and some of the finer elements that were being removed from the church, such as a 100-paned gothic-arched window, were repurposed in the build. In the 20th century, the house was home to the artists Eugene Fisk and Elizabeth Organ, who also used it as a gallery. The Baileys occupation of the house, and their exacting work on the interior, has only added a further layer of allure to this outstanding home.

Clyro is a small, attractive village with a post office, church and pub. It can be found close to the border of England and Wales, a mile and a half from the larger town of Hay-on-Wye. Hay-on-Wye is best known as the 'town of books' and the Hay Festival, which is one of the world's most celebrated literature festivals. The area is also known for its outstanding beauty, with the Brecon Beacons and Black Mountains nearby.
