The single-storey house, with a large garden, has been designed along the clean lines of the classic mid-century Modern style – a style all too rarely seen in the UK. The influence of Mies van der Rohe, Craig Ellwood, Philip Johnson et al can clearly be seen in the extensive glazing (most of the wall-to-wall windows open up onto the garden) and low profile of the house. Gresham Dodd was an architect who worked largely in the education sector and his houses are little known, making this house something of an undiscovered gem of the period. It is little altered and is being sold by the family of the original architect.
Internally the house is currently arranged with three bedrooms and two kitchen / living rooms, but there are architects' plans that show the space arranged with five bedrooms and one kitchen / living room. The house was designed specifically with this flexibility in mind. Almost all rooms overlook the garden and the fields beyond. The fields are protected from building by a local covenant. The house is in original condition but is in need of updating throughout (the flat roof, however, has recently been redone to a high specification). It is reached via a bridal path on the edge of the village of Jordans.
Jordans is an attractive and historic village, with a large green, a good school and a village shop. It is noted for its strong sense of community. It was a centre for Quakers in the 17th century, and many of the buildings from the period survive. Many other buildings (a good proportion of which are now listed) date from the 1920s, when Jordans was designated a ‘model village’. The village is close to the historic towns of Beaconsfield and Amersham. It is served by Seer Green and Jordans railway station (30 – 40 minutes to London Marylebone) and is 5 miles northwest of the M25 / M40 intersection.
