Behind the late-Victorian façade of this five-bedroom terraced house is an extraordinary modern living space with significant spatial drama.

The house was redesigned in its entirety in the 1980s by the architect Brian Muller, who stripped it back to the structural fabric of brick, joists and lath, and planted a tree that grows through the middle of the space. Huge glazed up-and-over doors flood the interior with natural light and allow it to be opened up to the south-facing garden, providing a seamless transition between inside and out. Metal service ducts and boldly exposed pipework are a nod to the High Tech movement pioneered by architects such as Norman Foster and Richard Rogers.

Accommodation is arranged over three floors. The ground floor is perfectly suited to entertaining, with a 35ft split-level reception room leading to an open-plan kitchen and dining area. The two upper floors contain the sleeping accommodation, with five bedrooms and three en-suite bathrooms. One of the bedrooms has a mezzanine in the eaves of the building, providing extensive amounts of storage, and there is a large study on the first floor, overlooking the dining area. There is also further storage space in the cellar.

The house was the subject of an extensive feature in the Architectural Review shortly after it was completed. “On entering, most first-time visitors gasp,” it wrote. “The effect [of Muller’s design] is spacious, light, cheerful and very liveable. It is also enchanting at night…” After training in architecture, Brian Muller went on to become an experimental film-maker, which explains the house’s cinematic quality. Its previous owner is the actor Stephen Fry.
