This impressive 5 / 6 bedroom house on a large plot was designed in 1962 by the architect Norman Starrett. Created by the renowned developers Hyndewood as a 'luxury speculative house', it has been sympathetically maintained by the current owner. Most of the original detailing remains intact, although the internal layout has been updated (most notably with the garage turned into a studio space).
The two-storey design, with a large living area on the first floor, makes the most of an attractive site. Extensive glazing and terraces integrate the internal spaces with the external landscaping. The finishes used at Starretts are exceptional – both the original (such as the terrazzo fireplaces) and those added by the current owner (who is himself a designer). The house could benefit from some minor updating but is largely in very good order.
Starretts is five to ten minutes' walk from the high street of Chislehurst and fifteen minutes from Royal Parade, both of which boast a wide range of independent shops, chain shops, supermarkets, cafés and restaurants. It is also ten minutes' walk from both Chislehurst (Zone 5) and Elmstead Woods (Zone 4) trains stations. Journey times are from 15 minutes to London Bridge and 25 minutes to Charing Cross. European train travel is possible from nearby Ebbsfleet International (a fifteen-minute drive). The M25 and M20 are within five minutes' drive.
The area is particularly well-served by both primary and grammar schools. The local recreation ground is a five-minute walk, with larger green open spaces at Chislehurst Commons.
