This remarkable five-bedroom house, originally built in the mid 19th Century, has been recently refurbished in spectacular style by the renowned designer Niki Turner. The Grade II-listed property can be found set back from the road behind gates in a tucked-away location just beyond the centre in the popular Gloucestershire town of Stroud.

Originally a large cloth merchant’s villa, the building (now divided into two semi-detached properties) is largely in the French Baroque style with beautiful external detailing including mansard roof, a moulded eaves cornice, circular oeil-de-boeuf windows and paired Tuscan columns. Turner has offset this elaborate architecture with simple, spacious interiors. Nowhere is this more evident than in the kitchen / dining room, a wonderful double-height space that formerly served as the house’s billiard hall. The soaring ceilings, capped with a skylight, create a space that feels like an industrial conversion. The abundance of space in this room has been utilised with a mezzanine study area above the kitchen. The kitchen features slate work tops and wood pellet 3-oven range cooker. The dining area opens up onto a small conservatory that leads out into the garden.

The living room, with a wonderful canted bay window, has high ceilings and an open fire. The period detailing on the ceiling on wall panels is also exquisite. To the rear of the ground floor is a versatile studio space with skylights. Also on this floor is a utility area and WC and recently added entrance porch designed by Turner. Steps lead down in one direction to a cellar, currently used for storage, and up to the first floor.

The first floor features three bedrooms, the largest of which is the master, and a family bathroom. The bathroom is notable for the bespoke fittings, formed from copper piping, that have been designed by Turner.

On the second floor there are two further bedrooms, one with a wonderful circular oeil-de-boeuf window, and a shower room. There are lovely views from this floor across the Slad Valley to the rear of the house.

There is a good-sized level garden which is largely lawn at the property as well as a driveway that provides space for off-street parking.

The centre of Stroud is approximately 2/3 of a mile from the property. Stroud is a popular town that stands at the meeting point of the Five Valleys, and is surrounded by the Cotswold Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in all directions. It has a broad range of shops, restaurants and also a national award-winning farmers market which takes place weekly on Saturdays. The house is 12 miles away from Cheltenham, and a 30 minute drive from junction 15 of the M4. The railway station, from where direct trains to London Paddington take approximately one and a half hours, is a 15-20 minute walk away.
