Winter Haven Florida, USA From approx £995 per wk Introduction Accommodation
Designed in 1954 by the celebrated architect Gene Leedy, this three-bedroom house with a pool is a perfect example of American Mid-Century Modern architecture. Lovingly restored and furnished by the owner, it has featured in numerous books, magazines and television shows.
The house takes the form of two separate wings divided by a pool and hot tub. Leedy was a leading light of the so-called Sarasota School of Architecture, a group of like-minded architects working from the Florida town of Sarasota. Active in the 1950s and 60s, and led by Paul Rudolph, the influential Sarasota architects helped to define a style that suited the warm Florida climate and lush landscape. Oversized sliding glass doors, allowing the traditional boundary between outside and in to be eradicated, are a typical 'Sarasota' feature seen at the Winter Haven house.
The house is located on a secluded, private plot in the town of Winter Haven, Florida. It is on a quiet road often referred to as 'Leedy Street' due to the number of houses on it designed by the architect (one of which Leedy himself occupies). Other architectural attractions in the area include Florida Southern College in Lakeland (about half an hour drive) which houses the largest collection of Frank Lloyd Wright buildings in one location and, of course, Sarasota itself (a one and a half hour drive). The Winter Haven area is home of the largest network of lakes in the state, making all types of water sports and fishing a part of everyday life. The historic Bok Tower Gardens are only fifteen minutes away. Disneyland and Universal Studios can both be reached by car in approximately 45 minutes.
