Xeros Phoenix, Arizona USA £855,000 approx ($1,250,000) Introduction Accommodation Download floorplan (pdf)
This striking and innovative house is elevated above the ground in order to make the most of the surrounding views and minimize its impact on the environment. The 2-bedroom property was designed by Blank Studio and completed in 2005.
The western façade of the house is opaque, shielding the interior from the intense midday sun, and the exposed south and eastern faces are protected from the elements by an external layer of steel mesh. Constructed of exposed corrugated steel, the exterior is intended to weather naturally and blend into its surroundings.
Accommodation consists of a two-storey studio on the lower levels with a lateral living space above. The studio is accessed via a short flight of stairs into an enclosed courtyard with water feature and reflective pool. The main living accommodation is accessed separately via an exterior steel staircase. Inside is a large open-plan kitchen / dining / reception room with a gallery leading to the cantilevered master bedroom. This vast bedroom suite is completely glazed on the north façade to enjoy the mountain views, and has a dressing room, sitting area and balcony. The interior is finished with raw concrete, wax-sealed plaster and exposed steel beams.
The house is located on the outskirts of Phoenix, Arizona, within striking distance of the city centre, but with wonderful views towards the mountains and nearby nature reserves.
