Tilty Hill has been the subject of a book, 'Barn', published by Booth-Clibborn Editions in 1999. The introduction reads:
“In 1994 British photographer Fi McGhee bought a derelict Dutch barn in Essex, dating from 1723. In collaboration with the architect John Pawson, the barn was converted into a studio and home for her family and horse, creating a minimalist haven in the depths of the countryside. The book documents the five-year process of de-construction and re-construction involved in renovating the barn, charting the way that Pawson’s much documented ‘minimalist’ philosophy was combined with McGhee’s own practical needs… to produce a truly remarkable working and living space”.
Also included in numerous other books, most notably 'Minimalist Architecture' by Franco Bertoni, the house has been well documented over the years.
John Pawson has described the house thus:
"A complex of agricultural barns is transformed into a series of residential spaces in which the refinement of the newly inserted elements, such as full height glass walls and low partitions in white plaster, contrasts with the simple directness of the original structure. Alterations on the exterior of the U-shaped complex are proportioned in such a way as to respect the character of the structure. Rather than cutting inappropriate window openings into old walls, the interior is lit by large scale sheets of glass that sit directly on the ground and make the original pitched roofs appear to float." |
