This spectacular 4 / 5-bedroom house occupies one half of a former handbag factory. The building was coverted into two modern homes by Knott Architects in 2000.
Internal accommodation measures just under 2,000 sq ft over two floors. The focal point of the house is a dramatic double-height living and
dining space on the ground floor, with a long bank of skylights. At its apex, the roof is 17ft above the floor. Internal
windows high up in the space can be opened up so that it is overlooked
from the bedrooms above. The ground floor also contains a kitchen, a playroom or lounge area, an artist's studio, a fifth bedroom or study, bathroom, utility room and cloakroom. The first floor contains four bedrooms.
Part of the factory roof was removed to create a courtyard garden, which is shared with the house next door. The house is entered through a covered area with storage for bins and bikes. It is an unexpected gem, quietly set back from the road.
The house demonstrates an intriguing use of materials. Externally, it is clad in Douglas fir. The bathroom has walls of sand and cement render with a waterproof additive; these are punctuated by coloured Perspex rods sunk into the exterior walls, which send beams of light across the room when the sun comes out. At night, the bathroom wall from the outside looks like a pinboard of tiny red and yellow lights.
The house is located a short walk from Finsbury Park station, which offers swift access to central London on the Victoria Line and Piccadilly Line, as well as Overground services. The open spaces of Finsbury Park itself are also close at hand.
