“The Dinesen wood floors distil a sense of calm and quality on the lower level, whilst the craftsmanship in the joinery of the handrails, sliding doors, built-in shelves and storage cupboards has been made a prominent feature in both the look and use of the living space.”

Designed by the multi-award-winning practice Dallas, Pierce, Quintero is this acutely well-imagined four-bedroom house with a sculpted rear garden and self-contained studio. Located on Powerscroft Road, the interiors are an excellent demonstration in combining sophisticated materials and craftmanship to create playful and dynamic living space.

The three-storey house is entered at raised ground level via attractive stone steps. The interior space is divided over three floors – the lower ground level is occupied by a separate flat. Welcoming and bright, the hall opens to a double reception arranged as a sitting and dining room. Beyond the dining room is a beautifully designed kitchen that opens to the rear garden.

The kitchen is equipped with a run of minimal units that stretch out along one side, creating space for a built-in bench seat that combines with a smaller kitchen table. There is a view to the garden through a large picture window, and a door to a raised deck with steps down to the landscaped garden. At the far end of the garden there is a self-contained studio, a quiet and private spot with a raised deck that looks back across the garden towards the house.

The first floor has three good-sized bedrooms, a useful laundry room, and hidden behind what looks like a storage cupboard, a wonderfully designed bathroom with a luxuriously large bath beneath a slanted skylight, a walk-in shower and twin basins.

The top floor has been turned into an extraordinary master bedroom, a creatively designed space that includes a very private roof terrace and a glass-encased shower that looks out onto the terrace.

It is clear that the materials used throughout the house were an important implication in the design brief. The Dinesen wood floors distil a sense of calm and quality on the lower level, whilst the craftsmanship in the joinery of the handrails, sliding doors, built-in shelves and storage cupboards has been made a prominent feature in both the look and use of the living space.

Powerscroft Road is very well located on the quieter residential streets of Lower Clapton between London Fields, Chatsworth Road and Clapton itself. An increasingly popular area, there is a lively selection of independent shops, cafes and restaurants nearby such as My Neighbours The Dumplings, P Franco, Peg and Les Nenettes, and specialist food suppliers L’epicerie and Organico. There is an excellent Sunday market and a number of good pubs in the area such as The Elderfield, Adam & Eve and The Spread Eagle, London’s first vegan pub.

Local Millfields park, the canal and the marshes are all a five-minute walk away and a fantastic escape amidst the urban setting. The canal path leads to the Olympic Park.

A short walk to the west, across Hackney’s Mare Street, are the green spaces of London Fields. There are many fantastic restaurants locally, notably Lardo on Richmond Road, the recently opened Angelina’s on Dalston Lane, and Pidgin and Violet on Wilton Way. Weekly markets also take place at Victoria Park and Well Street, and Broadway Market has a reputation for some excellent places to eat and drink, and hosts a food market on Saturdays. The E5 Bakehouse, on the edge of London Fields, is excellent for freshly baked artisan bread and grains.

Lower Clapton is a wonderful area for families with some excellent schools, including Rushmore Primary (Ofsted Good), Millfields Primary (Ofsted Good) and Clapton School for Girls (Outstanding). The house sits within the catchment area for Rushmore Primary school.

Hackney Central runs direct services to Stratford and Highbury & Islington on the London Overground, whilst London Fields also offers direct trains to Liverpool Street.
