“A striking combination of dark-stained brickwork, corrugated aluminium and green-framed windows”

Stego House is a 1980s end-of-terrace house with three bedrooms, which unfolds over two levels of approximately 1,050 sq ft of internal space. It was extended and updated to an award-winning design by London-based architects Archmongers, winning second prize in the New London Architecture’s ‘Don’t Move, Improve’ 2019 award, and was a finalist in the AJ Small Projects 2019 Awards. Located on a quiet residential street close to the greenery of Kennington Park, the light-filled house has a courtyard garden and makes clever use of space.

The Tour

The sawtooth profile of its extended roofline earns Stego House its dinosaur-inspired moniker, its vertical protrusions reminiscent of the triangular plates on the back of a stegosaurus. The design connects the existing house with a converted garage and employs a striking combination of dark-stained brickwork, corrugated aluminium and green-framed windows by Velfac.

Entry is on Cooks Road via a small front garden. A neat porch leads to an entrance hall containing a staircase with built-in storage underneath. Opposite is a guest WC and shower room, while a compact study makes clever use of the angular space between the existing façade and the boundary wall of the house.

The hallway leads into the living room, an open-plan expanse that extends into a terrazzo-lined kitchen and dining room. A series of clerestory windows allow natural light to pour in, while sliding glazed doors let further sunlight in and open to the south-facing, quarry-tiled courtyard garden.

At the far end of the plan is a fantastic bedroom that steps down into the former garage space. The shape of the roof creates a dramatic sense of volume and contains a glazed section, which frames the tropical foliage of the courtyard from a third aspect. Built-in wardrobes line the far wall and a clerestory window invites light into the space. Underfloor heating extends across the entire ground level. The upper level contains two further bedrooms, both of a similar size, which lie on either side of a family bathroom.

The Area

Stego House is excellently positioned for access to the green spaces of Kennington Park and Burgess Park. The immediate area is home to many exciting new restaurants, bars and cafes including Louie Louie, Orbit Brewery, The Manor of Walworth, Golazio and Elephant and Castle’s Artworks project. The creative hub Pullens Yards is within walking distance, as is the new development around Walworth Town Hall and Arts Academy Gallery.

Kennington and Elephant and Castle underground stations are nearby, providing access to central London via the Northern and Bakerloo lines, as well as Overground services further afield. The surrounding area is well served by a frequent bus service into the City, the West End and beyond.
